What you'll learn here

Key words

der Reisepass der RAI-ze-pas
the passport
“Der Reisepass” (or just “der Pass”) = the passport. For EU/Schengen flights “der Personalausweis” (the ID card) is enough. “Ihren Ausweis, bitte” = your ID, please.
das Gepäck das ghe-PEK
the luggage
“Gepäck aufgeben” = to check in luggage (to the hold). “Das Gepäck” has no plural — one suitcase = “der Koffer”. At the scale: “Bitte stellen Sie den Koffer auf die Waage” = please put the suitcase on the scale.
die Bordkarte di BORT-kar-te
the boarding pass
“Die Bordkarte” = the boarding pass. You get it printed or on your phone (“auf dem Handy”). It shows the gate (“das Gate / der Flugsteig”) and the boarding time (“Boarding”).
der Flugsteig der FLUUK-ștaig
the gate
“Der Flugsteig” = the gate (the German term), but everyone also says “das Gate”. Announced with a letter + number: “Gate B12” / “Flugsteig B12”. Watch the board (“die Anzeigetafel”) — the gate can change.
das Handgepäck das HANT-ghe-pek
the hand luggage
“Das Handgepäck” = hand luggage, you take it on board. It has strict size and weight limits (often one bag + a small personal item). Liquids: max 100 ml per container, in a clear plastic bag.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in German.

“Morgen! Wohin geht's denn?” — Morning! So where are you headed?
“Einchecken?” — Checking in?
“Ihren Ausweis, bitte.” — Your ID, please.
“Passt. Geben Sie 'nen Koffer auf?” — All good. Are you checking a suitcase?
