die U-Bahn di U-baan
the metro / subway
“U-Bahn” (Untergrundbahn) = underground metro; “S-Bahn” (Stadtbahn) = urban train, often above ground, toward the suburbs. U lines: U1, U2, U3... with “Richtung” (direction) at the end. The same ticket is often valid across the whole “Verbund” (network: U-Bahn + S-Bahn + tram + bus).
die Fahrkarte di FAAR-kar-te
the ticket
“Fahrkarte” = “Fahrschein” = “Ticket” — all mean ticket. You get it from “der Fahrkartenautomat” (the machine) or via app (DB Navigator, the local network app). “Einzelfahrt” = a single trip; “Kurzstrecke” = short trip (a few stops), cheaper.
entwerten ent-VEAR-ten
to validate (the ticket)
WATCH OUT: the ticket MUST be validated (“entwerten”) BEFORE boarding — at a small yellow or red post/machine “der Entwerter” on the platform or at the entrance. An unvalidated ticket = as good as no ticket. App tickets are already active, no stamping needed.
die Linie di LII-ni-e
the line
You say “die Linie U2” and especially “Richtung ...” (direction = the terminus stop), not “toward the center”. The sign reads “U2 → Richtung Messe”. Always check the “Richtung” so you don't go the wrong way. “der Bahnsteig / das Gleis” = the platform.
die Tageskarte di TAA-ghes-kar-te
the day ticket
“Tageskarte” (1 day, unlimited trips) is often worth it from 2-3 rides. “Gruppentageskarte” = group day ticket (up to 5 people), very good value. Riding without a valid ticket = “Schwarzfahren”, typical fine 60 €. Often there are NO barriers — but there are random checks by plain-clothes inspectors.
