What you'll learn here

Key words

der Taxistand der TA-xi-știant
the taxi rank
In Germany you rarely hail a taxi on the street — you go to “der Taxistand” (station, airport, hotel) or order by phone or app (Free Now, Uber). At the rank you take the first taxi in the line.
der Flughafen der FLUUG-haa-făn
the airport
“Zum Flughafen, bitte” = To the airport, please — the standard phrase. “Zum” = to. For the station you say “Zum Bahnhof” or “Zum Hauptbahnhof” (the main station, short “Hbf”).
das Taxameter das ta-xa-MEE-tăr
the taximeter
The price is fixed and regulated: “das Taxameter” calculates by km plus a starting fee (“die Grundgebühr”). On long trips (e.g. to the airport) you can agree a fixed price in advance: “Festpreis”. Cards aren't always accepted — ask “Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?”.
die Quittung di KVI-tung
the receipt
“Die Quittung” = the receipt, handy especially for business expenses. You ask: “Können Sie mir eine Quittung geben?”. The driver writes one or prints it from the meter. “Die Rechnung” = the bill — for taxis “Quittung” is more common.
das Trinkgeld das TRINK-ghelt
the tip
For taxis you round up, ~5–10%. You DON'T hand the tip separately — you say the amount when paying: “Stimmt so” (keep the change) or “Machen Sie 20” (make it 20), and the driver gives you change up to that amount.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in German.

“Tag! Wo soll's hingehen?” — Hi! Where to?
“Und wohin?” — And where to?
“Anschnallen, bitte. Alles gut?” — Seatbelt, please. All good?
“Wir fahren über die Autobahn, geht schneller.” — We'll go via the motorway, it's faster.
