Asking for directions — Italian

What you'll learn here

Key words

la piazza la PIÀTS-tsa
the square
“La piazza” is the heart of the town — a landmark and a social hub. The “fontana” (fountain) in the square is often a meeting point.
la chiesa la CHIÈ-za
the church
Churches are excellent landmarks — they're everywhere and everyone knows them. “Punto di riferimento” = a reference point.
il semaforo il se-MÀ-fo-ro
the traffic light
“Al semaforo” (at the traffic light) is a very common direction landmark. “Giri a destra / a sinistra” = turn right / left.
l'incrocio l'in-CRÓ-cio
the crossroads
“Il primo / secondo incrocio” = the first / second crossroads. “Sempre dritto” = straight ahead.
il cartello il car-TÉL-lo
the sign
“Il centro” (downtown) is often signposted. Watch for “ZTL” signs too — zones closed to cars in historic centers.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Italian.

“Buongiorno! Cerca qualcosa?” — Hello! Looking for something?
“Dove deve andare?” — Where do you need to go?
“Dunque... sempre dritto, e al semaforo a destra.” — So... straight on, and at the light, right.
“Tutto chiaro?” — All clear?
