At the bank — Italian

What you'll learn here

Key words

il bancomat il BÀN-co-mat
the ATM
“Il bancomat” = both the ATM and the debit card. “Prelevare” = to withdraw. Watch the daily limit and independent ATMs with high fees.
la banconota la ban-co-NÒ-ta
the banknote
“La banconota” = banknote; “le monete / gli spiccioli” = coins/change. Many small places can't break €100/200 notes.
il cambio il CÀM-bio
the currency exchange / rate
“Il cambio” = both the exchange and the rate. A bank is often fairer than the airport “cambiavalute”. Ask about the “commissione” (fee).
lo sportello lo spor-TÉL-lo
the counter (window)
You take a queue ticket (“il numero”) and wait to be called to “lo sportello”. “Lo sportello automatico” = the ATM.
la carta la CÀR-ta
the card
“La carta” (credit/debit); “il PIN” is the same word. “Contactless” is said the same. If the ATM “retains” your card, call the bank right away.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Italian.

“Buongiorno! In cosa posso aiutarla?” — Good morning! How can I help you?
“Cosa le serve?” — What do you need?
“Quanto le serve?” — How much do you need?
“Guardi, oggi il cambio conviene.” — Look, today the rate is worth it.
