Many trolleys need a €1 coin you get back. “Il cestino” = the hand basket, for a few items.

Useful aisles: latticini (dairy), frutta e verdura (produce), surgelati (frozen), bevande (drinks), pane (bread).

the (self-service) scale
Unlike the market, at the supermarket you weigh produce YOURSELF on the scale and stick on the label. Use the glove!

the checkout
“Casse automatiche” (self-checkouts) are increasingly common. “Cassa rapida” = express checkout, for a few items.

Bags cost a few cents and are biodegradable. Many Italians bring their own “sporta” (shopping bag).

“Cosa cerca?” — What are you after?
“Altro?” — Anything else?
“La frutta la pesa lì, da solo, eh.” — You weigh the fruit there yourself, you know.
