“Der Pullover” (short “der Pulli”) = the sweater. “Die Jacke” = jacket, “das Hemd” = shirt, “die Hose” = trousers, “das T-Shirt” = T-shirt. “Pulli” is very common in everyday speech.

In Germany sizes are European: 36, 38, 40, 42… for clothes, or S, M, L, XL. Shoes use another scale (39, 40, 41…). The typical question: “Welche Größe haben Sie?” = What size are you?

“Die Umkleidekabine” (short “die Kabine”) = the fitting room. “Anprobieren” = to try on. You ask: “Kann ich das anprobieren?” = Can I try this on? At the entrance you often get a tag with the number of items.

“Umtauschen” = to exchange (for another item); with the receipt (“der Kassenbon / der Beleg”) an exchange is often possible, depending on the shop (no fixed rule; the 14-day right is for online purchases). Sale items (“reduzierte Ware”) sometimes can't be returned (“vom Umtausch ausgeschlossen”). You ask: “Kann ich das umtauschen?”
