der Mietwagen der MIIT-vaag-ăn
the rental car
“Der Mietwagen” = the rental car; “die Autovermietung” = the rental company. “Schaltung” = manual gearbox (the default in Germany!), “Automatik” = automatic — ask for it explicitly if you want it, otherwise you'll get a manual.
der Führerschein der FÜÜ-rer-șain
the driver's license
You need a valid “Führerschein” (license) + ID/passport + a credit card in your name. EU licenses are accepted; from outside the EU you may also need an international driving permit (“internationaler Führerschein”).
die Vollkasko di FOL-kas-ko
fully comprehensive insurance
“Die Versicherung” = the insurance (general). “Haftpflicht” = third-party liability (mandatory, basic). “Vollkasko” = fully comprehensive; “mit Selbstbeteiligung” = with an excess/deductible (you pay a set amount on damage), “ohne Selbstbeteiligung” = with no excess.
volltanken FOL-tan-kăn
to fill up the tank
The usual rule: “vollgetankt abholen, vollgetankt zurückgeben” — pick it up full, return it full. If you bring it back empty, the company refills it at a much higher price. “Volltanken, bitte” = fill it up, please (at the petrol station).
die Kaution di kau-ȚI-on
the deposit
“Die Kaution” = the deposit blocked on your credit card (not debit!) at pick-up — it's released once you return the car undamaged. Without a credit card in the driver's name, you often won't get the car.
