What you'll learn here

Key words

die Speisekarte di ȘPAI-ze-kar-te
the menu
“Die Speisekarte” (or just “die Karte”) = the menu. “Das Tagesgericht” / “das Tagesmenü” = the dish/menu of the day, often cheaper at lunch (“Mittagstisch”).
das Helles das HEL-es
the pale lager (draft)
“Ein Helles” = pale lager (typical in the south/Bavaria). “Ein Pils” (north, more bitter), “ein Weißbier/Weizen” (wheat beer), “vom Fass” = on tap. Tap water (“Leitungswasser”) is rarely served — you order bottled water “mit/ohne Kohlensäure” (sparkling/still).
das Schnitzel das ȘNI-țăl
the schnitzel
“Wiener Schnitzel” = veal (the authentic one); “Schnitzel Wiener Art” = pork. “Jägerschnitzel” = with mushroom sauce. “Pommes” = fries; “die Haxe” = pork knuckle.
die Rechnung di REH-nung
the bill
The bill doesn't come on its own — you ask for it (“Die Rechnung, bitte” or “Zahlen, bitte!”). You pay at the table, to the waiter. They often ask “Getrennt oder zusammen?” = separately or together (Germans often split the bill).
das Trinkgeld das TRINK-ghelt
the tip
Tip ~5–10%, usually by rounding up. You DON'T leave it on the table — you say the amount when paying: “Stimmt so” (keep the change) or “Machen Sie 25” (make it 25), and the waiter gives you the change.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in German.

“'n Abend! Für wie viele?” — Evening! For how many?
“Reserviert?” — Reserved?
“Die Karte. Was darf's zu trinken sein?” — The menu. What can I get you to drink?
“Das Schnitzel heute ist echt top, sehr lecker.” — Today's schnitzel is really top, very tasty.
