Asking for directions — Spanish

What you'll learn here

Key words

la plaza la PLA-za
the square
“La plaza” (mayor) is the heart of a Spanish town — a landmark and meeting spot. The “fuente” (fountain) in the square is often a meeting point.
la iglesia la i-GLE-sia
the church
Churches and cathedrals are great landmarks. “Un punto de referencia” = a reference point. “La catedral” is often in the old town (“el casco antiguo”).
el semáforo el se-MÁ-fo-ro
the traffic light
“En el semáforo” is a very common landmark. “Gira/tuerce a la derecha / izquierda” = turn right / left. “Todo recto” = straight ahead.
la esquina la es-QUI-na
the corner
“La esquina” = the corner; “la calle” = the street; “la manzana” = the block. “Está a dos calles” = it's two streets away.
el cartel el car-TEL
the sign
“El centro” is often signposted. Watch for the “zona peatonal” (pedestrian zone) in the old town, where cars can't go.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Spanish.

“¿Buscas algo? ¿Te ayudo?” — Looking for something? Can I help?
“¿Adónde quieres ir?” — Where do you want to go?
“Pues nada, todo recto, y en el semáforo a la derecha.” — So, straight on, and at the light, right.
“¿Me sigues?” — Following me?
