At the bank — Spanish

What you'll learn here

Key words

el cajero el ca-JE-ro
the ATM
“El cajero (automático)” = the ATM. “Sacar dinero” = to withdraw. Watch the daily limit and ATMs charging a “comisión” if it's not your bank.
el billete el bi-LLE-te
the banknote
“El billete” = the banknote (also a train ticket!); “las monedas / el suelto” = coins/change. Many small places can't break €100/200 notes.
el cambio el CAM-bio
the currency exchange / rate
“El cambio” = the exchange, the rate, and the change you get back. A bank is often fairer than the airport “casa de cambio”. Ask about “la comisión”.
la ventanilla la ven-ta-NI-lla
the counter (window)
You take a queue number (“el turno”) and wait to be called to “la ventanilla”. Many things now need an appointment (“cita previa”).
la tarjeta la tar-JE-ta
the card
“La tarjeta” (credit/debit); “el PIN” is the same. If the ATM “swallows” your card, call the bank right away.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Spanish.

“¡Buenas! ¿En qué le puedo ayudar?” — Hi! How can I help you?
“Usted dirá.” — Go ahead.
“¿Cuánto necesita?” — How much do you need?
“Mire, hoy el cambio compensa.” — Look, today the rate is worth it.
