le passeport lö pas-POR
the passport
Check-in is called “l'enregistrement”. For flights within the Schengen area (in Europe) an ID card is often enough; for flights outside Schengen you need a passport (“le passeport”). The agent often also asks for your booking.
les bagages le ba-GAJ
the luggage
Checked luggage is weighed on “la balance” (the scale). The usual economy limit is 23 kg; over that you pay “un supplément” (an excess fee). “Une valise” = a suitcase, “un sac” = a bag.
la carte d'embarquement la cart dan-bar-kö-MAN
the boarding pass
“La carte d'embarquement” shows the gate (“la porte”) and the boarding time (“l'embarquement”). You can have it on paper or on your phone. Before the gate you go through security (“le contrôle de sécurité”).
la porte la PORT
the gate
The full term is “la porte d'embarquement”, but the agent just says “porte 22”. The gate number appears on the departures screens (“les départs”). You'll hear “la porte” and “l'embarquement” (boarding).
le bagage à main lö ba-GAJ a MAN
the hand luggage
“Le bagage à main” (also called “bagage cabine”) goes with you in the cabin. It must fit in the overhead locker (“le compartiment à bagages”) and respect a size limit (often ~55×40×20 cm). Low-cost airlines are strict about size.
