Car rental — Italian

What you'll learn here

Key words

la macchina la MÀC-chi-na
the car
“La macchina / l'auto” = the car. Manual gearbox is standard in Italy; “automatico” costs more and should be requested in advance.
la patente la pa-TÉN-te
the driving licence
An EU licence works. From outside the EU you often also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check the minimum age (often 21+).
l'assicurazione l'as-si-cu-ra-TSIÓ-ne
the insurance
“La franchigia” = the excess you pay yourself in case of damage. “Kasko” insurance brings it to zero. Always ask about “la franchigia”.
le chiavi le CHIÀ-vi
the keys
At pickup you do a damage check with an agent. Photograph the car at pickup and at return!
il pieno il PIÈ-no
the full tank
Common policy: “full-to-full” — take it full, return it full. “Fare il pieno” = to fill up. Otherwise you pay for fuel at a higher price.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Italian.

“Buongiorno! Ha una prenotazione?” — Good morning! Do you have a booking?
“Cosa le serve?” — What do you need?
“Patente e carta, per favore.” — Licence and card, please.
“La base ha franchigia, la kasko no.” — The basic has an excess, the full one doesn't.
