What you'll learn here

Key words

il biglietto il bi-LIÉT-to
the ticket
“Andata” = one-way, “andata e ritorno” = round-trip. In Rome, the city BIT ticket (€1.50) is valid for 100 minutes on metro, bus and tram.
il binario il bi-NÀ-rio
the platform (track)
Binario = the platform/track. Always check the board: the platform can change at the last minute.
il treno il TRÈ-no
the train
“Regionale” = cheap, slow, many stops — and MUST be validated. “Frecciarossa”/“Italo” = fast, with an assigned seat, no validation.
l'obliteratrice l'o-bli-te-ra-TRÌ-ce
the validation machine
For the regional train: validate your ticket in the green/yellow machine BEFORE boarding, or you get a fine. Fast trains with an assigned seat aren't validated.
il tabellone il ta-bel-LÓ-ne
the (departures) board
“Partenze” = departures, “arrivi” = arrivals, “ritardo” = delay. The board shows time, destination and platform.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Italian.

“Buongiorno! Prego, mi dica.” — Good morning! Go ahead, tell me.
“Per dove?” — Where to?
“Andata e ritorno?” — Round-trip?
“Allora, c'è il regionale o la freccia.” — So, there's the regional or the “arrow”.
