Car rental — Spanish

What you'll learn here

Key words

el coche el CO-che
the car
In Spain the car is “el coche” (not “el carro”). Manual gearbox is standard; “automático” costs more and is requested in advance.
el carnet de conducir el car-NÉ de con-du-CIR
the driving licence
An EU licence works. From outside the EU you often also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check the minimum age (often 21+).
el seguro el se-GU-ro
the insurance
“La franquicia” = the excess you pay yourself in case of damage. “A todo riesgo” insurance brings it to zero. Always ask about “la franquicia”.
las llaves las LLA-ves
the keys
At pickup you do a damage check (“el parte de daños”). Photograph the car at pickup and at return!
el depósito lleno el de-PÓ-si-to LLE-no
the full tank
Common policy: “full-to-full” — take it full, return it full. “Llenar el depósito” = to fill up. Otherwise you pay for fuel at a higher price.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Spanish.

“¡Buenas! ¿Tienes reserva?” — Hi! Do you have a booking?
“¿Qué necesitas?” — What do you need?
“El carnet y una tarjeta, porfa.” — Licence and a card, please.
“El básico lleva franquicia, el otro no.” — The basic has an excess, the other one doesn't.
