At the family doctor — Spanish

What you'll learn here

Key words

la tarjeta sanitaria la tar-JE-ta sa-ni-TA-ria
the health card
In the EU you use the EHIC card (in Spain “la tarjeta sanitaria”). “El médico de cabecera” is the GP, free at the “centro de salud” (health center).
el fonendoscopio el fo-nen-dos-CO-pio
the stethoscope
“La consulta / la revisión” = the consultation. “Respire hondo” = breathe deeply — what the doctor asks with the stethoscope.
la receta la re-CE-ta
the prescription
“La receta” you take to the pharmacy. Now often “electronic”: the medicine is linked to your health card, you collect it directly. “El volante” = the referral to a specialist.
el análisis de sangre el a-NÁ-li-sis de SAN-gre
the blood test
The blood test is often done “en ayunas” (fasting), in the morning. “Los resultados” (results) come after a few days.
la sala de espera la SA-la de es-PE-ra
the waiting room
At the health center you go in with “cita previa” (an appointment). “¡El siguiente!” = next! For emergencies go to “urgencias”, not the GP.

How locals really say it

Not the textbook version — the real language you hear in Spanish.

“¡Buenas! Siéntate. ¿Eres el de las diez?” — Hi! Have a seat. Are you the ten o'clock?
“¿La tarjeta sanitaria?” — Health card?
“¿Qué te pasa?” — What's wrong?
“Respire... eso es. La tensión, bien.” — Breathe... there. Blood pressure's fine.
